"Three years ago a
couple friends of mine who live in Montreal came back to Vietnam to visit. She
was born in Hanoi and is a doctor of piano.
She was one of the students of Dang Thai Son – the most famous pianist
in Vietnam. She grew up in the old quarter before leaving for
Montreal to study.
We chose to go to a
European style restaurant. After a warm and cosy dinner, we went for a
stroll. We walked a lot, nearly an hour
and a half. Everything looked so
different to how it did in daylight. For me, it was more quiet, the colour and
the sounds. It gave me a kind of feeling that I’ve never had before, a good one
but full of surprises. Despite all of us being born in Hanoi we felt like
tourists, like strangers in our own country.
We decided to try one
of the most famous desserts of Hanoi “Banh Troi tau”. There is a very popular
place to eat this: the place of an artist named Pham Bang. His store is at 30
Hang Giay. My friend’s husband really wanted to try this dessert but normally
he couldn’t because “Banh troi tau” is often on sale when the weather is cold
and they often come back to Vietnam at a different time. Although we were all
so full after the dinner he ordered every dish on the menu so he could try it
all. Since that night it has become our tradition, to immerse ourselves in our
home country again: nice café and dinner, then a walk and “ banh troi tau”.
